Keeping you Koi pond clean should be one of your number one priorities. A clean pond could mean the difference between you Koi living a beautiful stress free life, and potentially suffering until they ultimately die. The water in which your Koi live is not only where they eat, sleep, and feed, but it is also where they use the bathroom as well. If you do not properly clean your pond, it is almost as if your Koi are living in the bathroom toilet.

The water in your pond should almost be completely clear. Your pond should contain no floating or suspended debris, and the Koi should appear to be floating in air. If you are unable to see the bottom of your pond, then chances are your pond is not clean enough.

We know that you take great pride in your pond, especially when you were constructing the beautiful landscape around it, and picking out flowers that bloom in beautiful colors and have beautiful smell that are unmatched. However, no matter how beautiful the landscape around the pond is, a pond is not successful unless you can sustain beautiful fish within the water. While ponds are designed to resemble nature, you must remember that your Koi pond is actually just a really large outdoor fish tank, and that it needs to be treated as such.

Unlike natural water systems, fish tanks need a large amount of care. Filtration systems are needed to maintain water quality, and a pump system is needed to keep the water moving.

In nature, Koi would not nearly the amount of food that they do in controlled ponds. It is not unheard of for pond owners to feed many pounds of food to their Koi per week. This produces a larger amount of waste, whether it comes from the digestion process on the Koi’s part, or the amount of uneaten food that has settled to the bottom and spoiled. It is important to vacuum the bottom out as much as possible, and make sure all types of drainage systems are clear and in working order.

Another issue is the fact that your pond is indeed, outside. Being outdoors, your fish tank faces problems that a normal indoor fish tank would never have to deal with. Debris can easily find its way into your pond. It is important to skim your pond as much as possible.

No matter if your blame the Koi, yourself, or nature for the pond not being clean, it is important for you to clean it up. The health of your Koi is at stake if you do not. Even if your water quality is clear, a large amount of debris can cause your Koi stress. Stressed fish are more susceptible to disease and viruses.

Preventing Cleanliness Issues

Above cleaning your pond on a regular basis, adding preventative measures can also increase the cleanliness of your pond.

Keeping your pond moving is one way to help keep your water quality up Moving water adds more Oxygen to your water, as well as potentially keep floating debris for collecting in your pond. Moving water can be achieved several ways such as waterfalls, fountains, and pump filtration systems designed to move water.

Another way you can avoid cleanliness issues is by keeping your amount of fish down. Start by buying smaller amounts of fish as spawning will cause you to have babies in the near future. The less fish, the less waste is involved.

Did you know that everything that lives in your pond needs a constant supply of oxygen in the water to stay alive? If there’s too little oxygen in the water, all the fish will eventually die. Not only that, all the good bacteria and plants will also die. Below we will briefly examine how you can control Oxygen in ponds by using air pumps.

The aeration of your pond is to a large extent determined by how much oxygen can dissolve in the water. If you, to name just one example, overpopulate the pond with fish, it will disturb the oxygen balance of the pond. A similar problem will occur if there is large quantities of ‘bad’ algae that prevent oxygen from getting through to the water. In such a situation your pond will not be able to sustain life.

In nature aeration happens by itself without any help. Unfortunately humans often disturb the natural balance that exists in nature by actions such as placing an oversupply of fish in a small pond, feeding the fish too much or too often. Then the balance can only be restored by human intervention.

You will most often find that fish in the pond die of too little oxygen during very hot summer days when the wind isn’t blowing. The problem can partially be prevented by installing water filters for the removal of ‘bad’ algae from the water and also water features such as waterfalls and fountains. Another way to help aerate the pond is to introduce oxygenator plants. You might also have to reduce the number of fish and to feed the existing fish less often. If the problem isn’t resolved by any or all of the above, you will have to install an air pump.

Before buying any air pump, first carefully scrutinize the instruction leaflet provided by the pump’s manufacturer. There are a huge variety of pumps on sale nowadays and they’re not all suitable for all types of ponds. You have to select the right pump for your pond therefore. Some pumps can, for example, only work in shallow ponds. All pumps have a maximum when it comes to the cubic meters/feet of water they can aerate per minute. A pump with a small capacity in this regard will therefore not work for a large pond.

If you have a pond with Koi fish, you most likely already know that Kois need larger quantities of water than most other types of fish. A Koi pond should therefore generally be larger than other fish ponds. When buying an air pump for a Koi pond you must make sure it can handle such large quantities of water. As a general rule, your pump should be able to aerate at least 40lpm for each 1000 gallons of water.

If you install a bubbler at the pond’s bottom it will also have a beneficial effect on aeration. A bubbler produces oxygen bubbles that will set free oxygen in the water while they’re rising from the bottom of the pond to the surface.

Air pumps will not just serve to increase the amount of Oxygen in ponds. They will also serve to hamper the growth of so-called ‘bad’ algae. The increased levels of oxygen in the pond water will have a beneficial effect on everything that lives in the pond. The bio-diversity will be improved and you will have a much healthier pond in general.

Aside from the fact that salt is one of the most common condiments used around the world, it is also important in the pond keeping industry since it has been proven that sodium chloride can make the pond better and make the fish in it a little happier.

It is not widely known for salt or sodium chloride to be a good supply used in pond maintenance. Well it is actually capable of promoting better pond health and making the fish happier. The sodium element in salt is needed in the pond in order to supply electrolytes in the water which are necessary for the health of pond fish. The salt aids the process of osmoregulation which is needed by the fish in the pond so that they can absorb the right amount of water they need in their body. Apart from this, the sodium in pond salt also help recompense for the ions that the fish normally lose.

It is unavoidable for a pond to have a slime build-up right at the bottom. This is due to the excessive food droppings and other debris that accumulate in the pond which form muck at the bottom. The slime can lead to bad bacteria amass and other virus types influx in the pond water. Because of these occurrences, the defence mechanism of the fish may go down thus making them prone to certain infections and sicknesses. It is but a requirement to have the pond regularly checked and make sure that the fish are getting the ample electrolytes needed by the fish to survive.

For a pond that houses freshwater fish, it is necessary to increase the amount of pond salt in the water to meet the required levels of electrolytes needed by the fish. These electrolytes are needed to help fluids to move with ease on the fish’s bodies bringing about the natural body mucous coating of the fish. This coating is needed to repel parasite, viruses and bacteria that may cause the fish to be ill. Another type of mucous body coating can be increased with the help of pond salt and that type of mucous is necessary for the fish to survive the temperature brought about by the winter season.

Pond salt is also capable of aiding other beneficial processes in the pond. One of which is the mucostimulation. This process is needed in the pond in order to fight the fish irritation caused by ammonia and nitrite present in the pond most especially if the pond filters do not work properly. The chloride anion present in pond salt will compete with the nitrite anion that enters the fish gills thus decreasing the irritation. Mucostimulation, as the name implies, is responsible for the increase of protective slime coating on fish skins. For overcrowded pond, pond salt is indeed necessary to calm the fish in the water. Overpopulated ponds are usually caused by nitrite toxicity. Therefore, if the nitrites in the pond are dealt with through pond salt, the stress that the fish will have will be lessened.

I am writing this article to tell you something about aquariums in general. However, not about those big aquariums which can be found in Zoo’s or museums, but about home fish tanks. Of course, if you have a castle, or really big house, your home aquarium can be as big as those public ones. On the other hand not everybody is Bill Gates, or Queen of the United Kingdom. For us, ordinary people, smaller versions are produced.

But from another point of view, small doesn’t immediately mean it’s small too much; It’s relative. Even in a small flat or house you can have aquarium with capacity of few hundred litres. Basically, you can have only 10 litres aquarium as well. Bear in mind that introducing any fish into such small tank would be crime. Small sized aquariums are more suitable for plants only.

Previous idea leads me to the first point: tanks division based upon living beings. You can have, as I just wrote, a plant of a fish tank. And you can have an aquarium, which contains fish and plants living together in peace and harmony. Especially the harmony aspect is very important. Some fish prefer green food, and we can say that healthy looking aquarium plants are irresistible for them, but some fish need plants for hiding purposes as well. If such species don’t have enough hiding places, they feel stressed and they can even die. On the other hand we know species which don’t require plants necessarily, but they love to lay on their leafs and they also appreciate smooth touches how leafs slide through their bodies when swimming around.

Now, when you know that there is a direct relation between fish and plants, you should know something about various fish species compatibility. Let’s take a quick look into the natural food chain; It’s not the rule every time, but almost every time that larger fish eat smaller ones. Naturally, there exist exceptions where some little aggressive fish can eat the a big one as well. Piranhas, Puffer species, etc., etc. And this is how it goes in home aquariums too. An aquarium with many peaceful fish is called community aquarium. An aquarium where you keep aggressive fish and small peaceful fish together can be called a dinner time. And the last type is characterised by many aggressive fish kept in one little tank; This is called “fight to the dead” or “fight until the end”. Generally, I recommend community tanks instead of second and third case.

Previous paragraph shows you that it’s important to know everything about fish you want to own. Focus on temperament primarily. If you are beginner, there are some species, you should start with. These species are not demanding, and they don’t require much care. I am talking about Guppies, Platies, Mollies, Swordtails, Neon tetras, etc. These species are very peaceful and harmless, sometimes shy. Bear in mind that they should be kept in shoals, what means you shouldn’t keep 1 or 2 of them in one tank, otherwise they will not feel happy. Plecos and many catfish species belong to this “not demanding” group. Unlike fish which do best in shoals, they don’t need to be kept with too many specimens of their family or genus. Plecos require driftwood which becomes their most favourite place as time goes by. They suck it all day long. Another good fish for beginners is betta fish. Especially males are beautiful. They exist in many colour variants and their big fins look like jewels in the tank. They don’t harass other species, but if you put two males into one aquarium, they will kill each other. Nobody knows why. Once scientist put two males into very big garden pond, but they found each other and started to fight immediately. So how they could survive the evolution? In Thailand where they live in lakes, there is an alpha male which is the boss and nobody is fighting when he’s in.

If you aren’t a beginner any more, you can try for example Gouramies – bit aggressive, territorial and they eat everything small, what is or isn’t moving sometimes. Another nice species is the Angelfish. But they grow to big sizes, so they need a big tank. This category includes also Cichlids which come from America, Africa, and many species originating in Asia.

But if you don’t mind to spend a lot of time and and if you have enough experiences, you can choose a demanding fish, like the Discus fish – it needs special water conditions, or puffer fish. Fish from this group need special water, special feeding, or they breed unusually. Or they even need large aquarium, like Oscar fish, freshwater Sharks, or Koi carps. Sometimes it is better to keep them in garden ponds and not in the tank in the room.

What is a koi fishpond lacking koi? A millpond! Now that is boring…

Many clients who want a cascade and koi millpond do not want koi fish to take nurturing of. Actually, a fishpond will expect excluding mind with fish than without. Pile them into the car or bus and go to the confined pond pile and harvest up a passel of predacious and local pond creatures. Better yet — size a koi pond first and then do it.

A List Of Common Fish Diseases And Their Symptoms

There are a lot of diseases fish can suffer from, and a majority of them are infections. Some of the common parasites are bacteria, flukes, ich, argulus, chilodonella, saprolegnia, etc. The following is a list of the most common diseases in aquarium fishes with their brief descriptions.

1.Bacterial Diseases in Fish

Bacteria are a very common cause of complaint for fish breeders. There are many bacterial diseases in fish caused due to pathogenic bacteria. These bacteria can either attack the fish externally, or can enter into the body of the fish through the skin and can damage internal organs, even leading to death. Fin rot and bacterial gill disease are the most common bacterial attacks in fishes, in which the fins and the gills are infected respectively. If the bacteria have managed to gain entry into the body, it is known as systemic infection. Bacteria can also cause ulcers and lesions on the body of the fish. Bacterial infections are easily apparent externally as ulcerous marks or red irritations on the skin of the fish. Bacterial infections are very common in koi fish.

2.Fish Lice

Fish lice are scientifically termed as argulus, and being about a centimeter in size, they are among the largest parasites found in the animal world. They are very detrimental to the health of the fish, because they can suck out the fluids from the body of the fluids by clamping their proboscis like mouth into the bodies of the fish.

Lice are easily to identify on the bodies of the fish because they are clearly visible. However, it is necessary to carry a careful inspection of the body of the fish, especially in the hidden areas behind the fins. Lice may appear as dark spots when they are not moving. If there are too many lice, the fish will be quite agitated and will move their body a lot.

3.Flukes in Fish

Flukes are parasites in fish that are harmless in small numbers, but can be fatal to the fish in large numbers. Flukes are small, about 2 mm in length, and are almost invisible to the naked human eye. But these flukes have hooks through which they clamp to the bodies of the fish. Flukes can suck out the body fluids from the fish and even cause their death. The significant threat from flukes is that one fluke requires only one fish to complete its lifecycle, and therefore there is more reason why the fluke will remain clamped to the fish. Flukes have been considered to be the most difficult of the fish parasites to treat, though treatments with malachite and formalin often show positive results in stronger doses.

4.Ich

Commonly known as ich, ichthyobodo or costia is a very common parasite that is found on the bodies of fish. Several fish can live with this parasite showing no signs at all. In fact, in small numbers, ich is harmless. The defenses of the fish can keep the number of ich under control. But when fish suffer from some other disease, the defenses are broken and then ich begins to multiply. Ich can multiply at a very fast rate. In no time, the fish will show a large amount of ich on its body, its breathing will become labored and shortly, it will retreat and isolate itself from the other fish. When this stage arrives, ich often proves fatal to the fish.

The truth is that these lights are far more important than just being used for illumination. They are important because most fish are attracted towards light. Using two lights is better than using one light. This will help you if one of the lights dies down, as you will at least have a backup. If you are using both of them at a time, place them 3′ to 4′ part. This will enlarge the radius of light, and therefore bring in more fish towards the light. From the aforementioned lines, you can deduce that the key is to attract the bait-fish because other fish will follow behind. To attract bait-fish, the best choice is to use two lights at a time. One of them should be white, and the other can be either blue or green.

Backyard Waterfalls: How to Build One in Your Own Backyard

Is there anything more tranquil than backyard waterfalls? Have you ever thought about putting one in your backyard? Building a waterfall and koi pond combination could not be simpler, but before you head to the hardware store and start digging up the yard there are a few things you will want to consider. Planning in advance can save you a lot of time, aggravation and the possibility of having to start all over! Take the time to examine the following tips before you begin your backyard waterfall.

Size of Yard

The first thing you want to consider is the size of your yard. While you may really want, a large waterfall that empties into a big Koi pond this may overwhelm your space and not give you the desired effect. Look at your overall yard space and garden area to determine the size of your waterfall and pond; you want this to be a work of art not a constant eye sore.

Natural Amenities

Next, consider the makeup of your yard. Are there features you can incorporate naturally into your backyard waterfall and Koi pond? The best affects will come from using what is naturally available to you, and when you are done, it will look as though it has always been a part of the surroundings. Look for large rocks and natural depressions when working out a plan for your waterfall.

Location

Where you put your backyard waterfall is just as important as all the rest. Not only do you need to consider the natural lay of the land but also the man made additions as well. A natural rock formation and depression may exist on the outer edge of your property line but how are the neighbors going to handle the constant bubbling of your babbling brook? Keeping a good relationship with your neighbors is much more important that creating a waterfall. You will also want to consider the location of underground wires or utilities as the water department or electric company will be rather put off if you hit one of their main lines in your artistic efforts! Not to mention the safety aspect of digging and hitting an electric line.

Necessary Parts

In addition to planning your waterfall location and size, you should take time to list the necessary pieces to the puzzle. If you go to the store and begin buying the pieces you need helter skelter, you will find you can quickly run out of money! You will need stones, pond water pump, sand, gravel, liner and a shovel to dig with in order to create your backyard waterfall and Koi pond. Stones, gravel and shovel may already be available to you, so choose what you purchase carefully.

Conclusion

Once you have all your parts and plans in order it is time to begin building the koi pond and waterfall. Dig your pond first and then begin constructing your waterfall, a good rule of thumb is to build the falls at one and a half times the size of your pond. This is not set in stone but a general landscaper’s guideline. The most difficult part of the process will be getting your waterfall just right, but the beauty of gravity is this, if you pour water at the top it must flow down!
